Glaetzer Bishop Shiraz – a great example of a top range shiraz from this well known maker
Wisps of cloves, nutmeg and five spice add definition to the layers of dark stone fruits and espresso. The palate has density yet also displays savoury, textural components and fine-grained ripe tannins.
Glaetzer Bishop Shiraz is a true expression of Barossa Shiraz that is elegantly structured with a long finish.
The first Glaetzers settled in the Barossa Valley in 1888 after emigrating from Brandenburg, Germany. The family left Germany on board the Nord-Deutscher Lloyd steamer “Habsburg” and took seven weeks to reach their final destination of Port Adelaide. From here they settled in a country town called Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley where they started their new life in Australia. The family were some of the earliest recorded viticulturalists in the Barossa Valley and Clare Valley
Variety :
100% Shiraz
Vineyards :
Exceptional old vine fruit was sourced from the famed Ebenezer sub district at the northern tip of the Barossa Valley. Vine age 35 120 years old. Yield 3 tonnes per hectare.
Vintage Conditions :
Above average winter rain followed by warm spring temperatures resulted in healthy vines showing significant early bud growth. Mild temperatures during December and January coupled with good end of January rain set up the vines nicely for the ripening period. Harvest started early on 14 February and was completed on 15 April consistent with the normal finishing time. The resultant 2015 vintage wines have deep, vibrant colours with savoury tannins and rich, seductive flavours.
Fermented in 1 and 2 tonne open fermenters. Extended maceration was employed to enable good tannin development so the wine is soft and approachable early. Matured for 16 months in a mix of 40% new oak and 60% 2 3 year old oak hogshead barrels (90% French / 10% American).

“Winemaking patriarch Colin Glaetzer established his own label to create wines he’s passionate about – limited quantities of benchmark Barossa Valley reds. Today, Ben Glaetzer carries on this family winemaking tradition and has created a small, focused portfolio of classic Barossa Valley reds which draw on traditional Barossa viticulture but are unmistakably new wave Barossa in style.
The exceptional fruit for all Glaetzer wines is supplied by a loyal group of third and fourth generation Barossa grape growers and comes from a small sub-region (1.5 sq miles) of the Barossa Valley called Ebenezer. The dry-grown vines range from 30-120 and are a unique part of Australia’s viticultural heritage producing wines of great intensity and elegance. The Australian Langtons Fine Wine Guide wrote `Glaetzer is one of the emerging stars of the Barossa… philosophically and by heritage.`”
The Barossa Valley is one of the major regions in Australia, where many of the major wine companies are based. It is believed the first vineyards were planted in the 1840s by Silesian migrants (who settled in Bethany). There followed a rapid expansion of plantations. The early styles of wines produced were heavy dry red wines and fortified wines that were popular both domestically and in Britain. After the Second World War the styles shifted to lighter table wines with production of Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The Barossa Valley is home to some very well known names such as Seppelt, Wolf Blass and Penfolds as well as many smaller producers. The climate is Mediterranean with hot dry summers and cool wet winters, making it ideal for viticulture. The main wine styles: White – Semillon, Riesling, Chardonnay, Semillon-Chardonnay blend; Red – Shiraz (full bodied & ripe) with Old Vine Shiraz a speciality of many vineyards, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Shiraz-Grenache-Mataro blend, Cabernet-Merlot blend.
